I regularly meet with couples who run into the same road block when planning their wedding ceremony – “We have no idea what songs to choose!”.
Anybody remember George?
My advice is not to panic, go with your gut and remember the standard wedding ceremony format as a basis for your song choices:
Part 1: Processional ie ‘walk down the aisle’ (one song required)
Part 2: Signing ie ‘get that thing officiated – sign on the dotted line’ (one to two songs required)
Part 3: Recessional ie ‘the congratulations – ‘woop woop hug kiss mwa mwa’ (one song required)
PLUS One for the pot (it’s always best to have extras if needed)
How do your songs fit your ‘couple story’?
Think back – way back… What were you listening to together when you first met? What do the two of you like to dance to at social gatherings? What was on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist during the milestones that you have experienced together or when the oxytocin was buzzing around in those first few months of ‘courtship’ (I like old fashioned words). If you’re anything like me, when I first met my love, I was listening to heaps of sop. The soppiest of soppy love bangers… Bringing me to my next point.
Cheese is good – it’s your day
People tell me on the reg that they think their song choices are too cheesy. Truth is – even if they are, who cares? Your wedding day is a celebration of LOVE. The more you relate and resonate with your ceremony songs, the more special it will make it for you, your significant other and your guests (we want them to feel all the feels). Your taste is your taste. Whether it’s country, jazz, folk, rock or gangster rap (not as common an option, but totally doable) – if you put some meaning behind your choices, things will be that little bit extra special and memorable.
